The Subtle Art of Being Unbothered

"I intend to put up with nothing I can put down."  ~ E A Poe.

What does this phrase mean to you?

a drawing of Edgar Allen Poe and a quote from one of his letters
Temperance from The Poe Tarot

The Poe Tarot has chosen this quote for the Temperance card. Temperance is traditionally a card of balance and moderation, reminding us that all things must be limited in some way: the dose is the difference between medicine and poison.

In the letter in which Poe is quoted to have said this, he is responding to a fan who had written to him to "warn" him of negative reviews being published about his work. Poe thanks him for alerting him of the negative publications, stating "It is always desirable to know who are our enemies, and what are the nature of their attacks."

However, Poe continues by stating that he isn't too worried, and that he is ready to dismiss the complaints as easily as he can put down the paper and walk away from it. Why should we carry around the insults or criticisms of strangers or of those who we do not respect? What does it matter if someone does not enjoy your work, your art, your efforts?

Temperance from the RWS Tarot

With the lessons of Temperance combined with this Poe quote, we can be reminded to take the criticism and insults of others all in balance and moderation.

Is there something we can learn from our critics? Of course! Do we need to carry the burden or worry or fear of these enemies around, beyond taking the constructive criticism that helps us grow?

Take the medicinal dose of what you need for your growth, and then put down the remainder that would be poison to your wellbeing.  Take note of who you can trust, and who your enemies are, and then proceed with your life with this knowledge added to how you move forward.  Put up with nothing you can put down - and only respond when necessary - not because you are bothered, but because you are Wise.

As we begin Sagittarius Season, I am inspired to work with The Temperance Card and meditate upon it's many potential lessons. Today I felt called to work with The Poe Tarot by Trisha Leigh Shufelt and to share some of my thoughts with you. I hope that if you have found this post, you are encouraged or inspired by this message.
